Fiscal Stewardship

Fiscal stewardship is the moral foundation of state and local public leadership.

  • It is about creating and leaving to the next generation a more balanced and stronger budget to address a more challenging fiscal world.
  • It is about making, rather than avoiding hard choices to enable future generations a brighter future.

The Debt Ceiling Law: What Does it Mean for State and Local Governments and Their Citizens?
In August, Congress passed and the President signed the debt ceiling legislation into law, setting a series of deadlines that will affect every state and local budget and, potentially, fundamentally alter the process for financing capital and operating needs. With more than $1 trillion in federal spending on the chopping block and possible changes in the federal tax code looming to deal with the U.S. deficit crisis, the State & Local Leadership Center hosted a forum to examine and analyze how this federal law would affect the nation’s state and local governments, their elected leaders, and the services they provide.
